Take me back to Shawx.com Home

Page updated March 25, 2017                                                    Link to  Frank Runacres Main Page

This painting was on auction in California in February 2017. The title "by repute" is given as "Afternoon Cruise" however, a 1974 exhibition in London he had a painting titled "Waiting for the boat" given the fact these young folks seem to be informally in a queue and the clothes suggest a sixties or seventies period, my guess is that Frank Runacres titled this painting Waiting for the Boat and I will keep that name in this web site of his works. Dimensions: 25.25'' H x 43'' W

I came by this   image of a FR painting some months ago, and I was moving house and I lost the background information. However Bob Burgoyne of Formby sent me information from the auction as follows.

The boat house
signed and dated 'F.RUNACRES/1966' (lower right)
oil on board
60.5 x 44.5cm (23 13/16 x 17 1/2in).

It sold for 350 pounds sterling.

Thanks Bob!

Presented to John and Frances by "Uncle Frank" Runacres as an engagement/wedding present in 1963.

Mirrlees and Stephen Dolley

The three paintings to the right and in the row below were contributed by Andrew Martin along with the information below and with the paintings.

The first two were a wedding present to Janet Martin from Frank Runacres. The other four were purchased later on.

Owned by Dana Stuermer

Dana bought this in 1987 or 1988 in a local department store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.

One of two contributed December 2006 by Norbert Furnon-Roberts of Cape Town South Africa

Norbert purchased these from a Hamburg gallery ~1980

This is the second painting contributed by Norbert Furnon-Roberts of Cape Town

I have recently inherited a selection of pictures from an Uncle of which my favourite is the attached picture entitled 'The Groynes.' My late Uncle retired to live with his wife in Bournemouth, and I remember, when visiting as a young child, that this painting always had pride of place in the entrance hall.

The two watercolour painting to the right wer sent by Andrew Messam who recieved them in the 1990s from his Uncle (an avid art collector).

The next painting came from Pastor Don Fugate and is the Estuary that was exhibitd at the RA in 1954.

The painting to its right is a 1955 watercolor of an estuary scene contributed by Geoff Lawler.

The painting to its right was provided by John Nunn. It is an almost identical painting to that owned by Geoff but is a watercolour which John has always known as the Estuary.

(Just to further confuse things!)

The painting to the below was contributed by Pastor Don Fugate of Yuma Arizona in July 2008.  He purchased it in July1986 from Omni Art in Dallas Texas

"The Estuary"

exhibited RA 1954 Signed and dated 1951

16"x24" oil on masonite.

The painting below was provided by Geoff Lawler in July 2015. It is dated 1955 and is a watercolour.

Geoff inherited this painting when his mothery died.

It is a watercolour dated 1955 and signed in the bottom right corner.

Frank's wife Lilian Martha Holbrook was Geoff's grandfather's cousin. Frank and Lilian married on 19 May 1928 at Islington. Geoff's mother (Lilian May Pollard) was named after her. She inherited the painting when Frank's wife died.

Interestingly there is another very similar oil painting shown immediately to the right.

The Estuary 2?

I bought the picture from Arthur Stewart , a London dealer, in 1972, 73  or 74.

Arthur had a number of Runacres which were fresh in on the day I bought it ( at least 8, perhaps as many as 15)  I can't properly remember.  The Picture buyer from Marshall Field & Company of Chicago  Ill. (then still an independent and famous Store) was also there at the time, and he bought a number of the Runacres (perhaps 5 or more) as well as other pictures. All of which would have been shipped to the States and sold there.

Arthur claimed to have bought the whole collection direct from the Artist (?) the Studio (?)  -- again, can't remember which.    In my recollection, several of the other pictures were  Beach scenes with people in them.

My picture is Oil on Board : 32 inches by 26 inches unframed.  It is signed ( bottom left hand)  F. Runacres  but not dated.
I have always known it as "The Estuary" although there is no title on it anywhere.     The picture is with me on the Isle of Man.

Michael in May 2010 said:

I inherited the painting from my uncle Donald Conlon in about 1988 when he passed away. I believe the was given the painting by a relative of franks. My uncle was an actor, he lived in london, fulham and wandsworth, and had a circle of friends which included actors, artists and writers

this is how he would have come into contact with a relative or friend of Franks.

Frank Runacres painted the watercolour in1955.
